Merry Christmas; Fruits Basket FST: That Precious Little Thing

Merry Christmas, FLIST!

I’m having a lovely time with Mom, Dad, Granny, Mark, Vanessa, little Kaedmon, and Strider (the cat). So far, we’ve watched Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas (best Christmas movie EVAR), done lots of cooking (I made homemade salsa, just for general use during the next few days, and “Cranberry Delight” (cranberry sauce, Jell-o, fruit and nuts) for lunch tomorrow), and cracked out a puzzle of sexy pirate boy Will Turner to work on throughout the evening (we haven’t gotten very far yet.)

I hope everyone is having a wonderful evening, whether you are observing Christmas Eve or not.

And now, a bit of a Christmas present for my flist, especially the Furuba-loving types (and perhaps the music-sampling types). After all the music discussion this past week with f_ireworks and attaining—and the lovely FSTs they recently posted—I’ve finally made up my mind to post one of my own. I chose not to do a particular character or ship; this is more of a general soundtrack for Fruits Basket. I didn’t set out with a certain theme in mind, but when I had finished selecting the songs, it was obvious that one had emerged.

Fruits Basket FST: That Precious Little Thing

The recurring theme in this mix is hope, which Kyo describes in volume 11 as a “a tiny flower, precious.” The title to this FST, from a lyric in track 12, echoes his words.

If anyone who has graphics skills and a program to use them with would like to make cover art for this, I would be deeply grateful. I’m picturing an image or images of Tohru as a child, like those in chapter 33 and chapter 63 with the title “Fruits Basket” at the top and “That Precious Little Thing” at the bottom, or something along those lines.

I’ve never made compressed files before, so I hope I did everything right. If you run into any problems downloading, please let me know.

Rar file: That Precious Little Thing (includes bonus track)
Zip file: That Precious Little Thing (includes bonus track)

1. James Taylor ~ “Shower the People”

This is a song about how sincere affection heals us and helps us to heal others. I feel it captures the general mood of the entire anime and the first several volumes of the manga.

You can play the game and you can act out the part,
Though you know it wasn't written for you.
Tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart
Ashamed of playing the fool?
One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice.
Oh, father and mother, sister and brother,
If it feels nice, don't think twice.

Shower the people you love with love,
Show them the way that you feel.
Things are gonna be just fine if you only will.

2. Cyndi Lauper ~ “True Colors”

This song reminds me of the way Tohru accepts and loves the Sohmas, and sees the good inside each one of them, no matter how deeply buried it is.

You with the sad eyes, don't be discouraged,
Though I realize it's hard to take courage.
In a world full of people, you can lose sight of it all,
And the darkness inside you can make you feel so small.

But I see your true colors shining through,
Your true colors, and that's why I love you.
So don't be afraid to let them show, your true colors,
True colors are beautiful like a rainbow.

3. Fiction Plane ~ “If Only”

This song was written for the soundtrack of the movie Holes, based on a song the characters sing in the novel. That story also features a family under a curse, and I think this song expresses the right mix of helplessness and hope about life that the Sohma family feels.

You make mistakes and it’s my back that breaks.
And forever my past steals my life.
To submission I’m beat, but there’s hope beneath these feet…

“If only, if only,” the woodpecker sighs,
“The bark on the trees was as soft as the skies.”
As the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,
He cries to the moon, “If only, if only!”

4. The Left Banke ~ “Walk Away Renee”

“We can’t go back to the way things were…it would only end in sadness, for her, and for me…Now, all I can do is pray, ‘Be happy, Kana’” ~ Hatori, vol. 5, ch. 26

From deep inside the tears that
I'm forced to cry,
From deep inside the pain I—
I chose to hide…

Just walk away, Renee,
You won't see me follow you back home.
Now as the rain beats down upon my weary eyes,
For me it cries.

5. Dido ~ “Here With Me”

“For me, it still remains in my heart. That longing, that passion, paralyzingly sweet and sad. I want to make it last forever. I want to be able to hold it in my hands. And I will…If I can make it happen, I won’t feel guilty about the means to that end.” ~ Shigure, vol. 3, ch. 16

I don't want to call my friends,
For they might wake me from this dream.
And I can't leave this bed,
Risk forgetting all that's been.

Oh I am what I am, I do what I want, but I can't hide.
And I won't go, I won't sleep, I can't breathe,
Until you're resting here with me.

6. Chantal Kreviazuk ~ “In This Life”

This song is for Kyo and Tohru’s relationship in general, but especially for the test they both must face when Tohru sees the cat spirit’s “true form.”

Let me tell you who you really are:
You’re my comfort; you’re not a superstar.
I can reach up and bring you back down to the ground
And give you everything you dream about…

I’ll give you all the things that I never get,
Give you all I have and have no regret,
Take you to the places that I’ve never been,
Forgive you all the things that you can’t forget,
Take away the pain with my healing hands,
Wash away your sins and set your spirit free.

You can run from me,
You can hide from me,
But I am right beside you
In this life.

7. Burlap To Cashmere ~ “Eileen’s Song”

This song is for Hiro and Kisa. The love described in the song strikes me as innocent and tender, but beset by outside difficulties.

Hold my hand and we'll make it all right,
From this hell that we live in.
Cross the road until the light
Comes inside and lives within.
It's a long and lonesome ride
When your friends have all gone home,
But the roses in your eyes,
They pull me in so I don't feel alone.

You have one wing, I have another,
Seeking shelter like sister and brother.
Through the winter, through the summer,
Like one angel we fly far away.

8. Vienna Teng ~ “Lullabye For A Stormy Night”

This is a beautiful song in which a parent expresses words of hope to a troubled child. It reminds me of Kyo and Kazuma, especially the flashback in vol. 9 when Kazuma comforts Kyo from his childhood fear and the flashback in vol 11 when he helps him face his depression after the trauma of witnessing Kyoko’s death.

Little child, be not afraid,
Though wind makes creatures of our trees,
And their branches to hands; they're not real, understand,
And I am here tonight.

And someday you'll know
That nature is so
That this same rain that draws you near me
Falls on rivers and land,
On forest and sand,
Makes the beautiful world that you'll see
In the morning.

9. The Cure ~ “Lovesong”

“I did wish that you would stick with me wherever I ended up. But I don’t wish that anymore…But please…at least during the time I have left, I want to be near you. Until the time when I must go away, I want to be with you ‘til the end.” ~ Kyo, vol. 11, ch. 63

This song is beautiful in its simplicity:

However far away, I will always love you.
However long I stay, I will always love you.
Whatever words I say, I will always love you.
I will always love you.

10. Sheena Easton ~ “You Could Have Been With Me”

This song is for Kagura and for Motoko Minagawa. I, at least, take their love for unattainable Sohma boys seriously. Sometimes. ;)

You're the seventh son of a seventh son;
Maybe that's why you're such a strange and special one.
You can't even seem to love yourself,
And with a few exceptions, not anybody else.
You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink.
You can give a man your whole heart and soul, but you cannot make him think.

You could have been with me,
Instead of alone and lonely.

11. Tori Amos ~ “Sugar (live)”

This song is for Akito, and for Kureno, her “sweet boy”.

You and I know, I don’t know me very well,
And I know, and you know, if they found me out.
Sweet boy, when they find you out,
Tell me what you think they’ll do?
When they find you out…

My sweet boy, my sugar,
I know the robins bring,
They bring me many things,
But sugar, bring me sugar.

12. Sarah McLachlan ~ “Wait”

I’m amazed how perfectly this song fits Rin’s thoughts and feelings from volume 14—her conflicted love for Haru, her hope and despair about the possibility of breaking the curse, and even, a bit, her longing for comfort from Tohru. In fact, I had a really hard time picking just one snippet to quote as a teaser, so I just went with the first verse and chorus by default.

Under a blackened sky,
Far beyond the glaring streetlights,
Sleeping on empty dreams,
The vultures lie in wait.
You lay down beside me then;
You were with me every waking hour,
So close I could feel your breath.

When all we wanted was the dream,
To have and to hold that precious little thing,
Like every generation yields
A newborn hope, unjaded by their years.

13. Portishead ~ “Glory Box”

This song represents Akito’s “identity conflict”, as f_ireworks put it, particularly Shigure’s role in helping her to accept her femininity.

From this time, unchained, we're all looking at a different picture.
Through this new frame of mind, a thousand flowers could bloom.
Move over, and give us some room.

Give me a reason to love you!
Give me a reason to be a woman.
I just want to be a woman.

14. Ronan Keating ~ “Life Is A Roller Coaster”

This is a fairly light-hearted love song, which I think could apply to several of the couples in Furuba, but I like it mainly for Yuki and Machi. They are, I believe, the least angsty couple in Furuba (and that is saying something). That is, I think the struggles they face in their relationship are the most like those a “normal” teenage couple would face. This song reflects that.

Hey baby, you really got my tail in a spin.
Hey baby, I don't even know where to begin.
But baby, I got one thing I want you to know:
Wherever you go, tell me, 'cause I'm gonna go.

We found love, so don't hide it.
Life is a roller coaster, just gotta ride it.
I need you, so stop hiding.
Love is a mystery, so let’s get inside it.

15. Dixie Chicks ~ “Landslide”

This song is about growing up. In at least one live performance, Stevie Nicks dedicated it to her father, so I believe that the chorus is meant to be the words of a grown child to a parent. I think this song is an apt description of Tohru’s confusion and pain over facing her fear of losing her memories of her mother and learning to give a new kind of love to Kyo. Though I would normally prefer the Fleetwood Mac version, I like the higher and lighter voices of the Dixie Chicks to represent Tohru’s voice.

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I built my life around you.
But time makes you bolder,
Children get older,
And I’m getting older, too.

16. Rei Fu ~ “Life Is Like A Boat”

This song is for Kyoko’s longing to see Katsuya again.

And every time I see your face,
The ocean heaves up to my heart.
You make me want to strain at the oars,
And soon I can see the shore.

17. Switchfoot ~ “Dare You To Move”

This song is for Kyo and for Akito. When the chance for redemption came, they both took it.

Maybe redemption has stories to tell.
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell.
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here.

I dare you to move,
I dare you to move,
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor.
I dare you to move,
I dare you to move,
Like today never happened…
Today never happened before.

18. Hans Zimmer/Klaus Badelt/Lisa Gerrard ~ “Now We Are Free”

This beautiful, wordless song, borrowed from the Gladiator soundtrack, is what I hear in my mind’s ear for the curse-breaking montage in chapter 130.

19. Fleetwood Mac ~ “Songbird”

This song is for Kyo and Tohru and their happy ending.

For you, there'll be no more crying,
For you, the sun will be shining,
And I feel that when I'm with you it's all right.
I know that it's right…

And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself.

And the songbirds are singing,
Like they knew the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before.

Bonus Track:

Elton John and Kiki Dee ~ “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”

For some reason, whenever I hear this song I picture Ayame and Mine singing it to each other at a karaoke bar.

Aya: Don't go breaking my heart!
Mine: I couldn't if I tried.
Aya: Honey, if I get restless—
Mine: Baby, you're not that kind…

Aya: Ooo, nobody knows it,
But when I was down,
Mine: I was your clown!

Aya: Ooo, nobody knows it,
But right from the start,
Mine: I gave you my heart,
Oh, I gave you my heart!

Aya: So don't go breaking my heart!
Mine: I won't go breaking your heart!
Both: Don't go breaking my heart!

The mental image of them singing that amuses me to no end. :D

For my spoiler-purist friends, I’ve provided a spoiler-free version of the commentary. All the songs are included, but for some there are no comments or my comments are truncated. If you are spoiler-free please be careful to scroll down only, and DON'T scroll UP. The spoiler version is right above this.

From deep inside the tears that

Eee, this looks great! I will have to come back after the holidays to d/l it. Haha, I used "Lovesong" on my Kyo/Tohru FST a while back and, as I mentioned, "Glory Box" on my Akito FST. WE ARE IN SYNCH. The other song I think of for Akito's gender identity issues is The Dresden Doll's "Half Jack" which seems more a song for the transgendered, but not taken literally I think applies well to Akito. (The title is play on the rhyme Jack and Jill.)

Haha, thanks, now I will have Aya and Mine at a karaoke bar in my head all night!

This is lovely, thank you! And merry Christmas!!

This sounds great! The Aya/Mine one at the end sounds amusing, lol. Another good Haru/Rin one is "My Last Breath" by Evanescence. My fanfic title, "Hold on To Me, Love" is based from the first line of that song.
