Stories

"When I come up with a story and shape it, and someone reads it and thinks it was good. When my voice reaches people. There is nothing better than that." ~ Natsuki Takaya

A few months ago I was on a long car trip, squished between two people I did not know well in the back seat. After a few moments of relative silence, I fished a novel out of my bag and began to read.

One of the people next to me noticed this and asked, "Why do people like stories?"

The person on the other side of me said, "Why do people like candy?"

That conversation has come to mind often since that day. I won't (yet) regale you with what I think are the answers to that question of why humankind's love of "stories" is nearly universal. Instead, I hope you will take a moment to ponder this question, and perhaps, if you don't mind, share your thoughts with me.

On the topic of stories, have you heard about the re-licensing of one of our favourites?

Haha! Yes, I just saw the post about five seconds ago, as well as your "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!" (<--slightly abbreviated)

And Rozen Maiden, and Shonen Omyoji appear to have made the cut as well. If you read the original article, it also makes it sounds like FUNimation is handling distribution in partnership with Geneon, which suggests to me that the production will continue from where they left off, rather than re-starting with a new cast.

I had a friend in high school who considered reading fiction to be a waste of time. But he had a limited imagination and I disagree with him. A) it's fun, and B) you can see the real world in a different perspective and with a different understanding that you might not have considered until reading about the fictional lives of other people, so I think there is some educational value in fiction. I feel that I learn more about myself as I read about fictional characters and learn about them and their worlds.
I like stories. I often feel like my own life is a story.

I think we like stories because God has always told us to keep the stories of our own lives -- Adam was instructed to keep a book of remembrance -- and keeping our own stories also makes us think about what we did wrong, and what we could have done better... and what could have happened if things were different in such and such a way, which leads to fiction. Stories help us understand ourselves.

Re: Story telling

I'll be back at work by then, but we should be able to find a time for some coffee (tea for me) and a chat. Just give me a call when it's getting close to time.

Does this mean you are coming home for good?

Stuff

"In the beginning was the word..." The first occupation was writer see?

I can't understand people who don't like stories. Honestly, I'm a fiction snob.
