Music meme

Swiped from peachespig and connielane:

Step 1: Put your music player on shuffle.
Step 2: Post the first line from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
Step 3: Strike through the songs when someone guesses both artist and track correctly.
Step 4: Looking the lyrics up on a search engine is CHEATING! Though, really, can I stop you?
Step 5: If you like the game post your own.

I decided to skip songs that had the title in the first line. Also, I skipped instrumental songs and songs that are not in English.

1. The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the stony ground. - "Beautiful Day" by U2 - prettyannamoon
2. When I look back, boy I must have been green.
3. Turn down the light, turn down the bed. - "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Rait - merr0w
4. Mama, please stop cryin', I can't stand the sound.
5. I have felt it, all alone in prayer.
6. "Welcome to the real world," she said to me. - "No Such Thing" by John Mayer - prettyannamoon
7. I'm not here as a friend—I have a job to do. - "Please" from Miss Saigon - umadoshi and chicagoamy

10. I'm at your back door with the earth of a hundred nations in my skin. - [title still not guessed] by Vienna Teng - heavenscribe
11. I'd like to dedicate this to all of the Creator's righteous children.
12. Here's a puzzle I may never understand…
13. When peace like a river attendeth my way… - "It Is Well With My Soul" by [artist still not guessed] - connielane
14. Lovin' you isn't the right thing to do. - "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac - peachespig
15. One day, one night, one moment…
16. How did you get this number?
17. When the darkness falls early, and the light hits the ground… - [title still not guessed] by Burlap to Cashmere - crjace

It took me a while to remember the lyrics, but the Miss Saigon song is "Please".

Wow, it's been AGES since I've listened to that. I don't even have it on my iPod, will have to do that!

It's been a while since I really listened to it, too. I find I like to listen to musical theater when I have time to really pay attention to it, whereas lately all my music-listening time is only while I'm multitasking. So it's been a while since I really listened to any of my old musical theater favorites.

Yes! (You might consider giving #10 another look. The artist has been identified but not the title.)

Oh, blah. I should know it, but I don't. I listen to some of Vienna's songs more than others. :/

That's okay. I make mix CDs for my car, and it's the songs I put on those I tend to know instinctively. So yeah, I know some more than others, too.

Re: meme?

From my old friend Wikipedia:

The term Internet meme is a neologism used to describe a catchphrase or concept that spreads quickly from person to person via the Internet, much like an inside joke. The term is a reference to the concept of memes, although this concept refers to a much broader category of cultural information.

(Article: Internet meme)

A meme (pronounced /miːm/) comprises any idea or behavior that can pass from one person to another by learning or imitation. Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, gestures, practices, fashions, habits, songs, and dances. Memes propagate themselves and can move through the cultural sociosphere in a manner similar to the contagious behavior of a virus.

Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme" as a neologism in his book The Selfish Gene (1976) to describe how one might extend evolutionary principles to explain the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. He gave as examples melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious belief, clothing/fashion, and the technology of building arches).

That's correct. It has kind of a weird title--in fact, I had to look up the lyrics to recall if the title is even in the lyrics of the song (it is, but not until pretty late into it).
