How do I love Ron? Let me count the ways...

Well, it's the subject of the hour, and I said a few entries back that I wanted to post this anyway. It's recycled from an old post I made at FAP, and I recently used it as my contribution to tarie's compilation of Ron-love. I know I said I was going to expand it a bit, but...instead, I have actually streamlined it. Because you know what? I don't need to write pages and pages to justify my Ron-love. Really, I think just a brief sampling of canon really ought to be enough. So, here it is.

I’m only providing a few examples for each reason, but there are more examples for all except the last one. That one’s mostly in there just for fun. ;)

Ron is brave

PS/SS Ch 16 p 283 US

“Yes…” said Ron softly, “it’s the only way…I’ve got to be taken.”
“NO!” Harry and Hermione shouted.
“That’s chess!” snapped Ron. “You’ve got to make some sacrifices!”

PoA Ch 17 p 339 US

“If you want to kill Harry, you’ll have to kill us, too!” he said fiercely, though the effort of standing upright was draining him of still more color, and he swayed slightly as he spoke.

And perhaps one of the best examples, because it shows not merely daring—doing something brave—but true courage—doing something brave in spite of fear: CoS Ch 15 p 270 US

Ron read the message, swallowed hard, and looked sideways at the empty seat usually filled by Hermione. The sight seemed to stiffen his resolve, and he nodded.

Ron is loyal

OotP Ch 14 p 299 US

“Give it back,” said Ron, holding out his hand. “He is—” Ron said jerkily, tearing Percy’s letter in half, “the world’s” —he tore it into quarters— “biggest” —he tore it into eighths— “git.” He threw the pieces into the fire.

Ron chooses to be faithful to Harry (and Dumbledore, the Order, and what he knows is right), rather than listen to his brother and the temptation for power/recognition.

Ron is passionate

Red hair, anyone? I doubt I need to find examples of Ron wearing his heart on his sleeve. Personally, I find this quality incredibly attractive.

Ron is funny

I think Ron is quite clever. I love how he goes for the teasing-of-best-friends variety of humor a lot. Some people read this teasing as mean, but Ron-lovers read it as fun and playful. His best friends probably see it that way too, considering how much they let him get away with it.

GoF ch 13 p 194 US

“I’ve decided there are better ways of making a stand about elf rights,” said Hermione haughtily.
“Yeah…and you were hungry,” said Ron, grinning.

GoF ch 13 p 201 US

“Aaaaah,” said Ron, imitating Professor Trelawney’s mystical whisper, “when two Neptunes appear in the sky, it is a sure sign that a midget in glasses is being born, Harry…”

GoF ch 13 p 207 US

“Draco Malfoy, the amazing bouncing ferret…”
Harry and Hermione both laughed…

And that was only in one chapter.

Ron is nurturing

Ron is always doing things like:
-helping Harry into his pajamas in the hospital wing
-urging Hermione to eat when she is taking a stand on elf rights or nervous about OWLs
-making tea for Hagrid when he’s upset about Rita Skeeter’s article
-checking on Harry after his detention with Umbridge
-comforting Harry after his nightmares and visions of Voldemort

He’s a bit like a big brother. I think it’s cute.

Ron is adorably vulnerable and clueless

Ron’s humanity is probably his most endearing quality. Most Ron-lovers empathize with him when he’s down. We think it’s cute and funny that he doesn’t quite get some things. *coughHermionecough*

Favorite vulnerable!Ron moments:
-his introduction when he is embarrassed about being poor, and subsequent occurrences of the same theme
-the slug spell backfiring on him
-the fear of spiders/Aragog sequence
-everyone being shocked that he got the Prefect’s badge
-the whole “Weasley is our King” episode
-and, of course, his real low point: GoF Ch 18 p 288-289

“Look,” said Hermione patiently, “it’s always you who gets all the attention, you know it is. I know it’s not your fault,” she added… “I know you don’t ask for it…but—well—you know, Ron’s got all those brothers to compete against at home, and you’re his best friend, and you’re really famous—he’s always shunted to the side whenever people see you, and he puts up with it, and he never mentions it, but I suppose this was just one time too many…”

Ron is HOT

OotP Ch 14 p 290 US

[Oliver Wood’s old Quidditch robes] fitted him well…

*insert fangirl squeeing here*

I feel pretty lucky to be someone who loves Ron. After all, he is an important part of the books, and connecting with him emotionally does really enhance the HP reading experience, IMO.

My apologies to those of you who have seen this before. I think it may actually be the fifth or sixth time I've recycled it. But...I just needed to indulge my Ron-love one more time.
