Lewis quotes

Unfortunately, going on a little vacation means having to play catch up when you get back. I'll have to put off my entry on the second part of the C.S. Lewis conference another day. In the mean time, go and read connielane's version of events here.

Now, I thought I would share with you a few quotes form That Hideous Strength, which I am currently reading. These may be of particular interest to those of you who are familiar with certain aspects of HP fandom.

"I suppose there are two views about everything," said Mark.

"Eh? Two views? There are a dozen views about everything until you know the answer. Then there's never more than one."

and

"Of course," said Jane vaguely, and a little confused. "I'm sure you have a right to your own opinions."

[snip]"Mrs. Studdock, I have no opinions--on any subject in the world. I state the facts and exhibit the implications. If everyone indulged in fewer opinions [snip] there'd be less silly talking and printing in the world."

Just a few little tidbits that amused me, that's all.

From a purely entertainment standpoint, is that any good? I picked up that trilogy at a thrift store for about fifty cents last year, simply because I'd heard of it, but didn't really know anything about it.

I've never read anything by Lewis that wasn't unspeakably groovy. That said, I'm not very well-read, at all. The space trilogy comes highly recommended to you (by me, at least. I won't be offended it you take it with agrain of salt, since you don't know me from Adam. :cD ).

There is one of his writings in which Lewis says that explanations for concepts like propitiation and the trinity are merely that. Explanations. They are there for us to try to get a grip on something which is rather larger than what our minds are capable of being wrapped around, and it is a mistake to confuse these explanations for the things themselves. In the space trilogy, Lewis offers such explanations for spiritual warfare, angel/human interaction, and God's presence on Earth. Obviously, he doesn't have the semantics nailed down, but they are concepts, and interesting ones at that.

Yes, I find them entertaining, particularly That Hideous Strength, which could be read as a stand alone novel. So far it's turning out to be my favorite of the three. Out of the Silent Planet was also pretty entertaining, but I had a little trouble with Perelandra. The theology to story ratio on that one was a bit too high for my taste. I like reading theology, mind you, but I was expecting more story than what there was.

Thanks to both you and blastus for your answers--I think I'll bump those books up to the top of my Queue :-)

heh...i think it's funny that hymnia found perelandra to be her least favorite and that hideous strength to be her favorite. i LOVED perelandra but found hideous strength a little difficult to get into. once i got into it, i thought it was pretty good, but perelandra is by far my favorite. :) i do recommend them, though. they are great.
